Algebra, III, 639

Let Δ=det⁡(αij)\Delta = \det(\alpha_{ij}) be the determinant of a matrix UU of order nn; for each index ii (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) let Δi\Delta_i denote the determinant obtained by multiplying the element αij\alpha_{ij} in UU by βj\beta_j for 1≤j≤n1 \leq j \leq n. Show that the sum of the nn determinants Δi\Delta_i (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) is equal to (β1+β2+⋯+βn)Δ(\beta_1 + \beta_2 + \cdots + \beta_n)\Delta (expand Δi\Delta_i by the row of index ii).
