Exercise 8, § 8

Algebra, III, 639

Let Δ=det⁡(αij)\Delta = \det(\alpha_{ij}) be the determinant of a matrix UU of order nn and σ\sigma a permutation belonging to Sn\mathfrak{S}_n; for each index ii (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) let Δi\Delta_i be the determinant obtained by replacing the element αij\alpha_{ij} in UU by αi,σ(j)\alpha_{i, \sigma(j)} for 1≤j≤n1 \leq j \leq n; if pp is the number of indices invariant under the permutation σ\sigma, show that the sum of the nn determinants Δi\Delta_i (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) is equal to pΔp\Delta (same method as in Exercise 7).
