Exercise 9, § 8

Algebra, III, 639

Let AA be a square matrix of order nn, BB a submatrix of AA with pp rows and qq columns and CC the matrix obtained by multiplying in AA, each of the elements belonging to BB by the same scalar α\alpha. Show that each term in the total expansion of det⁡C\det C is equal to the corresponding term in the total expansion of det⁡A\det A multiplied by a scalar of the form αr\alpha^r, where r≥p+q−nr \geq p + q - n and rr depends on the term considered (perform a suitable Laplace expansion of det⁡C\det C).
