(Functor Γ\Gamma) Denote by kk a commutative ring and by EE a kk-module. By the gamma algebra of EE we understand the associative commutative unital algebra defined by the generating system N×EN \times E and by the relators (cf. III, p. 450)

(0,x)−1,(p,λx)−λp(p,x),(p,x+y)−∑r+s=p(r,x)(s,y),(p,x)(q,x)−((p,q))(p+q,x), (0, x) - 1, (p, \lambda x) - \lambda^p (p, x), (p, x + y) - \sum_{r+s=p} (r, x)(s, y), (p, x)(q, x) - ((p, q))(p+q, x),

where p,qp, q range over N\mathbf{N}, x,yx, y range over EE and λ\lambda over kk. This algebra is denoted by Γ(E)\Gamma(E). For each p∈Np \in \mathbf{N} we denote by γp\gamma_p the mapping of EE into Γ(E)\Gamma(E) composed of the injection x↦(p,x)x \mapsto (p, x) and the canonical homomorphism of the free commutative algebra on N×EN \times E into Γ(E)\Gamma(E). a) Verify that for each x∈Ex \in E, the sequence γp(X)\gamma_p(X) is a sequence of exponential type of elements of Γ(E)\Gamma(E) (Exercise 1) and that the mapping y:x↦(γp(x))p∈Ny : x \mapsto (\gamma_p(x))_{p \in \mathbf{N}} is a homomorphism of the kk-module EE into the kk-algebra E(Γ(E))\mathscr{E}(\Gamma(E)). b) (Universal property of Γ(E)\Gamma(E)). Let BB be an associative commutative unital kk-algebra and φ\varphi a homomorphism of the kk-module EE into E(B)\mathscr{E}(B). Show that there exists a unique algebra homomorphism h:Γ(E)→Bh : \Gamma(E) \to B such that φ=E(h)∘y\varphi = \mathscr{E}(h) \circ y. c) Show that there exists a unique unital homomorphism of algebras ε:Γ(E)→k\varepsilon : \Gamma(E) \to k such that ε(γp(x))=0\varepsilon(\gamma_p(x)) = 0 for all p>0p > 0 and all x∈Ex \in E. d) For each p∈Np \in \mathbf{N} let Γp(E)\Gamma_p(E) be the submodule of Γ(E)\Gamma(E) generated by the elements

γν1(x1)⋯γνs(xs) \gamma_{\nu_1}(x_1) \cdots \gamma_{\nu_s}(x_s)

where s∈Ns \in \mathbf{N}, ν∈Ns\nu \in \mathbf{N}^s and ∣ν∣=∑iνi=p|\nu| = \sum_i \nu_i = p. Verify that the submodules Γp(E)\Gamma_p(E) form a graduation of the algebra Γ(E)\Gamma(E). Show that γ1\gamma_1 is an isomorphism of EE onto Γ1(E)\Gamma_1(E) (to verify that γ1\gamma_1 is injective, consider the algebra B=k×EB = k \times E with the product defined by the formula (λ,x)(μ,y)=(λμ,λy+μx)(\lambda, x)(\mu, y) = (\lambda \mu, \lambda y + \mu x) and show that there exists a homomorphism of Γ(E)\Gamma(E) into BB which maps γ1(x)\gamma_1(x) to (0,x)(0, x) for any x∈Ex \in E. e) Let EE and FF be two kk-modules and hh a homomorphism of EE into FF. Show that there exists a unique homomorphism of graded algebras Γ(h):Γ(E)→Γ(F)\Gamma(h) : \Gamma(E) \to \Gamma(F) such that γp∘h=Γ(h)∘γp\gamma_p \circ h = \Gamma(h) \circ \gamma_p for all p∈Np \in \mathbf{N}. Verify that if gg and hh are homomorphisms of kk-modules such that g∘hg \circ h is defined, then Γ(g∘h)=Γ(g)∘Γ(h)\Gamma(g \circ h) = \Gamma(g) \circ \Gamma(h).

f) Let h : E → F be a surjective homomorphism of k-modules. Show that Γ(h) is surjective and that its kernel is the ideal of Γ(E) generated by the elements γ_p(x) with p > 0 and x ∈ Ker(h).

g) Let E and F be two k-modules. Show that there exists a unique homomorphism φ of the algebra T(E × F) into the algebra Γ(E) ⊗_k Γ(F) such that

(φ∘γp)(x,y)=∑r+s=pγr(x)⊗γs(y)(\varphi \circ \gamma_p)(x, y) = \sum_{r + s = p} \gamma_r(x) \otimes \gamma_s(y)

for any p ∈ N, x ∈ E and y ∈ F. Show that this homomorphism is an isomorphism compatible with the graduations.
