Exercise 13, § 6

Algebra, IV, p. 101

Let n≥1n \geq 1 be an integer, and order the elements of Nn\mathbf{N}^n lexicographically (notation a≤βa \leq \beta). For each a∈Nna \in \mathbf{N}^n let TaT_a be the set of elements of Z[X1,…,Xn]\mathbf{Z}[X_1, \ldots, X_n] of the form Xα+∑uαβXβX^\alpha + \sum u_{\alpha \beta} X^\beta (with uαβ∈Zu_{\alpha \beta} \in \mathbf{Z}).

a) Show that the product of an element of TaT_a by an element of TβT_\beta lies in Tα+βT_{\alpha + \beta}.

b) Let εk\varepsilon_k be the element (1,1,…,1,0,…,0)(1, 1, \ldots, 1, 0, \ldots, 0) of Nn\mathbf{N}^n. Show that sk∈Tεks_k \in T_{\varepsilon_k}. Deduce that

S(α)=∏k=1nskαk−αk+1 S(\alpha) = \prod_{k=1}^n s_k^{\alpha_k - \alpha_k + 1}
belongs to TaT_a, for a∈Nna \in \mathbf{N}^n such that a1≥a2≥…≥ana_1 \geq a_2 \geq \ldots \geq a_n. (Set an+1=0a_{n+1} = 0.)

c) With the notation of IV, p. 66, deduce that cs=ds=1c_s = d_s = 1 for a∈Dka \in D_k and cαβ=dαβ=0c_{\alpha \beta} = d_{\alpha \beta} = 0 if α<β\alpha < \beta.
