Exercise 4, § 6

Algebra, IV, p. 98

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let KK be a field of characteristic 0. Show that if αi (1≤i≤n)\alpha_i \ (1 \leq i \leq n) are nn elements of KK such that α1k+α2k+…+αnk=0\alpha_1^k + \alpha_2^k + \ldots + \alpha_n^k = 0 for nn consecutive values h,h+1,…,h+n−1h, h+1, \ldots, h+n-1 of kk, then a1=a2=⋯=an=0a_1 = a_2 = \cdots = a_n = 0. Show by an example that the property no longer holds if the nn values of kk are not consecutive or if KK is not of characteristic 0. \*
