a) Let K be a field and X1,…,Xn indeterminates. Show that for any exponents v1<v2<…<vn the determinant det(Xivj) is non-zero in K(X1,…,Xn).
b) Let sk (1≤k≤n) be the elementary symmetric polynomials in the Xi and r1,…,rn n elements of the field K(X1,…,Xn). We put (with a new indeterminate T)
R(T)=1+s1T+⋯+snTn1+r1T+⋯+rnTn=1+u1T+⋯+ukTk+⋯.
Show that if n of the coefficients uk are zero, then all the uk are zero. (Decompose R(T) into simple fractions.)
*c) Suppose that K is of characteristic zero. Let {v1,v2,…,vn} be a set of n elements ≥1 of N, and let M be the complement of this set in N; suppose also that M is stable under addition. Show that if y1,…,yn are n elements of K(X1,…,Xn) such that
Pvj(y1,…,yn)=Pvj(X1,…,Xn)
for 1≤j≤n, then yj=Xj for 1≤j≤n except possibly for a permutation. (Consider the expansion of logR(T)=v1T+v2T2+⋯+vkTk+⋯, observe that vvj=0 for 1≤j≤n and examine the relations between the vk and the uk.)
