Algebra, V, p. 156
Let K be a perfect field such that for every integer there exists a Galois extension N of K such that is isomorphic to the alternating group ; for example, for every field k of characteristic 0 the field of rational fractions in an infinity of indeterminates has this property (V, p. 59, Example 5). a) Let A be a finite set of integers and let be an algebraic closure of K. An element is said to be A-constructible if there exists an increasing sequence of extensions of K such that each of the degrees belongs to A for and . Show that there exists a maximal element L in the set of subextensions such that each is A-constructible. For each show that the degree belongs to . b) Let a be the greatest element of A and let be an integer such that . Show that there exists an extension M of L such that . (Observe firstly that there exists an irreducible polynomial of degree such that if N is the splitting field of f, is isomorphic to ; let be a root of f in and let . Show that we necessarily have and therefore is the desired field. Argue by contradiction, noting that the elements of are A-constructible and that the relation would imply the existence of a normal subgroup of such that , which would contradict the simplicity of (I, p. 143, Ex. 16).)
