Exercise 17, § 11

Algebra, V, p. 164

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let PnP_n be the set of monic polynomials Xn+a1Xn−1+…+anX^n + a_1 X^{n-1} + \ldots + a_n, of Z[X]\mathbf{Z}[X] whose roots in C\mathbf{C} all have absolute value ≤1\leq 1. a) Show that the set PnP_n is finite. Deduce that for every polynomial F∈PnF \in P_n, if FhF_h denotes the polynomial whose roots are the h-th powers of the roots of FF, then there exist two distinct integers h,kh, k such that Fh=FkF_h = F_k. b) Conclude from a) that all the roots of a polynomial F∈PnF \in P_n are either zero or roots of unity (* Kronecker's theorem »).
