Let p∈Np \in \mathbf{N} be a prime number, CpC_p the cyclotomic extension of level pp of Q\mathbf{Q}, ζ∈Cp\zeta \in C_p a primitive p-th root of unity and nn an integer. Write

Xn(ζ)=∑a∈Z/pZζan X_n(\zeta) = \sum_{a \in \mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}} \zeta^{a^n}

a) Calculate d=[Q(Xn(ζ)):Q]d = [\mathbf{Q}(X_n(\zeta)) : \mathbf{Q}]. Determine the Galois group of the extension Q(Xn(ζ))\mathbf{Q}(X_n(\zeta)) of Q\mathbf{Q} and the conjugates of Xn(ζ)X_n(\zeta). b) Let Td+a1Td−1+…+adT^d + a_1 T^{d-1} + \ldots + a_d be the minimal polynomial of Xn(ζ)X_n(\zeta) over Q\mathbf{Q}. Show that a1=0a_1 = 0. c) Suppose that n>1n > 1 and p≡1(modn)p \equiv 1 \pmod{n}. Show that a1=−n(n−1)p2a_1 = -\frac{n(n-1)p}{2} if p−1n\frac{p-1}{n} is even and a1=np2a_1 = \frac{np}{2} if p−1n\frac{p-1}{n} is odd. d) Suppose that p≡1(modn)p \equiv 1 \pmod{n}. Let β∈Fp∗\beta \in \mathbf{F}_p^* be an element whose residue class in Fp∗/Fp∗n\mathbf{F}_p^*/\mathbf{F}_p^{*n} is a generator. Let μ\mu be the number of solutions in Fpn\mathbf{F}_p^n of the equation ∑i=1nβi−1Xin=0\sum_{i=1}^n \beta^{i-1} X_i^n = 0. Show that a1=(−1)np(μ−pn−1)p−1a_1 = \frac{(-1)^n p (\mu - p^{n-1})}{p-1} e) Calculate a1a_1 when n=3n = 3 and p=7,13,19p = 7, 13, 19.

\* ^1 The largest totally ramified extension of the field Qp\mathbf{Q}_p of p-adic numbers in its algebraic closure is a field of characteristic 0 with the same property. \*
