Exercise 21, § 11

Algebra, V, p. 165

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let GG and HH be two commutative torsion groups such that for every integer nn, the equation nx=0nx = 0 has the same finite number of solutions in GG and in HH. Show that GG is isomorphic to HH. (Decompose GG and HH into direct sums of pp-torsion groups and apply Ex. 20.) Let G=⨁i∈NZ/piZG = \bigoplus_{i \in \mathbf{N}} \mathbf{Z}/p^i\mathbf{Z} and H=⨁i∈NZ/p2iZH = \bigoplus_{i \in \mathbf{N}} \mathbf{Z}/p^{2i}\mathbf{Z}. Show that GG and HH are not isomorphic and that for each integer nn the cardinal of the set of solutions of the equation nx=0nx = 0 is the same in GG and in HH.
