Exercise 22, § 11

Algebra, V, p. 165

a) Let kk be a field, ff a separable monic polynomial in k[X]k[X], DD a splitting extension of ff, x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n the roots off in DD and GG the Galois group of DD over kk. Assume that GG is cyclic. Show that for every element of GG to induce an even permutation of the xix_i it is necessary and sufficient that the number of irreducible factors of ff should be congruent to the degree of fmod  2f \mod 2 (consider a generator σ\sigma of GG and the decomposition into cycles of the permutation of the xix_i induced by uu). b) Suppose further that kk is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2. Show that the two above conditions are equivalent to the fact that the discriminant of ff should be a square in kk (« Stickelberger's theorem »).
