Algebra, V, p. 169

Let f be a monic polynomial in Z[X]\mathbf{Z}[X], irreducible in Q[X]\mathbf{Q}[X] and let p be a prime number such that the canonical image f‾\overline{f} of f in Fp[X]\mathbf{F}_p[X] is a polynomial without multiple roots. If Γ\Gamma (resp. Γ′\Gamma') is the Galois group of the polynomial f (resp. f‾\overline{f}) over Q\mathbf{Q} (resp. Fp\mathbf{F}_p), define an isomorphism of a subgroup of Γ\Gamma onto Γ′\Gamma'. Deduce that if f‾=g1g2…gr\overline{f} = g_1 g_2 \ldots g_r where the gjg_j are irreducible in Fp[X]\mathbf{F}_p[X] and if gjg_j is of degree njn_j (so that f has degree n=n1+n2+…+nrn = n_1 + n_2 + \ldots + n_r), then the group Γ\Gamma, qua subgroup of Sn\mathfrak{S}_n contains a product σ1σ2…σr\sigma_1 \sigma_2 \ldots \sigma_r of cycles with disjoint supports, σj\sigma_j being of order njn_j for 1≤j≤r1 \leq j \leq r (cf. I, p. 62). Generalize to the case where f is not monic, but where its leading coefficient is not divisible by p.
