Exercise 14, § 12

Algebra, V, p. 170

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let KK be a finite field, commutative or not, let ZZ be its centre, qq the number of elements of ZZ and nn the rank [K:Z][K : Z]. a) If EE is a subfield of KK containing ZZ, show that ∣E:Z∣|E : Z| divides nn. b) Let x∈Kx \in K be an element not belonging to ZZ; show that the number of distinct conjugates yxy−1yxy^{-1} of xx in K∗K^* is of the form (qn−1)/(qd−1)(q^n-1)/(q^d-1), where dd divides nn and is distinct from nn (consider in KK the set of elements permutable with xx, and use a)). c) Deduce from b) that q−1q-1 is divisible by the integer Φn(q)\Phi_n(q) (partition the group K∗K^* into conjugacy classes and use the relation (6) of V, p. 82). d) Show that if n>1n > 1, then Φn(q)>(q−1)φ(n)\Phi_n(q) > (q-1)^{\varphi(n)} (decompose Φn(X)\Phi_n(X) in the field C\mathbf{C} of complex numbers). Deduce that we must have K=ZK = Z, in other words, that KK is necessarily commutative (Wedderburn's theorem).
