Algebra, V, p. 167

Let K be a finite field of q elements where q is not a power of 2, and let a1,a2,ba_1, a_2, b be three elements of K such that a1a2≠0a_1a_2 \neq 0. Show that the number ν\nu of solutions (x1,x2)∈K2(x_1, x_2) \in K^2 of the equation a1x12+a2x22=ba_1x_1^2 + a_2x_2^2 = b is given by the following formulae : 1" if b=0b = 0 and −a1a2-a_1a_2 is not a square in K, ν=1\nu = 1; 2" if b≠0b \neq 0 and −a1a2-a_1a_2 is not a square in K, ν=q+1\nu = q + 1; 3" if b=0b = 0 and −a1a2-a_1a_2 is a square in K, ν=2q−1\nu = 2q - 1; 4" if b≠0b \neq 0 and −a1a2-a_1a_2 is a square in K, ν=q−1\nu = q - 1. (When −a1a2-a_1a_2 is not a square, adjoin to K a root of X2+a1a2X^2 + a_1a_2 and use the fact that the multiplicative group of a finite field is cyclic.)
