Let K be a finite field of q elements and let for an integer . For every polynomial of , put
and
a) Show that if P, Q are two polynomials in and if , then we have . Deduce that for two polynomials F, G of to be such that F divides G it is necessary and sufficient that should divide . (To see that the condition is sufficient, consider the Euclidean division of G by F.) b) Let F be an irreducible polynomial in and let G be any polynomial in . If there exists an integer d such that and have a common root, show that F divides G. (If H is the GCD of and consider the set of polynomials such that H divides .) c) Every polynomial of divides a polynomial of the form . Show that if and if is a root of , then a belongs to the extension K of degree and deduce that the degree of every irreducible factor of in divides (use a)). If further e and are relatively prime and if m is the degree of over the extension of K of degree , show that divides N (use the fact that (mode)). d) With the notation as in c), suppose that F is irreducible and that N is the least of the integers h such that F divides . If e and are relatively prime and if every prime factor of divides N, show that every irreducible factor of is of degree . (Note that in virtue of b) we then have .) e) Deduce in particular from d) that if is an irreducible polynomial in and if N is the least of the integers h such that divides , then every irreducible factor of is of degree N.
