Algebra, V, p. 146

a) Show that for every integer a≠0a \neq 0 the polynomial X4−aX−1X^4 - aX - 1 is irreducible in Q[X]\mathbf{Q}[X]. b) Let aa be a root of X4−aX−1X^4 - aX - 1 in an extension of Q\mathbf{Q}, and let K=Q(α)K = \mathbf{Q}(\alpha), which is of degree 4 over Q\mathbf{Q}. Show that there is an infinity of values of a∈Za \in \mathbf{Z} such that KK contains no subfield FF distinct from Q\mathbf{Q} and KK.
