Exercise 3, § 5

Algebra, V, p. 151

Let KK be a field of characteristic p>2p > 2 and let FF be the field of rational fractions K(X,Y)K(X, Y). Let E=F(θ)E = F(\theta) be an extension of FF generated by a root θ\theta of the polynomial

f(Z)=Z2p+XZp+Y f(Z) = Z^{2p} + XZ^p + Y
of F[Z]F[Z]. Show that [E:F(θp)]=p[E : F(\theta^p)] = p, but that EE contains non-radical element over FF not in FF. (Firstly remark that ff is irreducible in F[Z]F[Z]; if β∈E\beta \in E existed such that βp∈F\beta^p \in F, β∉F\beta \notin F, ff would be reducible in F(β)[Z]F(\beta)[Z]; using Ex. 2, show that then X1/pX^{1/p} and Y1/pY^{1/p} would belong to EE and we would have [E:F]≥p2[E : F] \geq p^2.) (See Ex. 1, V, § 7).
