Exercise 18, § 1

Algebra, VI, p. 32

Let (Gι)ι∈I(G_\iota)_{\iota \in I} be a family of totally ordered groups indexed by a well-ordered set II; define an ordering on the direct sum G′G' of the GιG_\iota by taking the strictly positive elements to be the nonzero (xι)(x_\iota) such that xι>0x_\iota > 0 for the first index ι\iota such that xι≠0x_\iota \neq 0. Show that G′G' is totally ordered.
