Exercise 3, § 1

Algebra, VII

Let AA be an integral domain in which every nonempty set of ideals has a maximal element and in which every maximal ideal is principal ; show that AA is a principal ideal domain. (Notice that if a≠Aa \neq A is an ideal of AA then there exists a maximal ideal (p)⊃a(p) \supset a such that 1pa\frac{1}{p} a, which is an ideal of AA, strictly contains aa.)

b) Let KK be a field, let K1=K((X))K_1 = K((X)) be the field of formal power series in one indeterminate XX over KK (IV, p. 38), and let B=K1[[Y]]B = K_1[[Y]] be the ring of formal power series in YY with coefficients in K1K_1. Let AA be the subring of BB consisting of those power series ∑n=0∞an(X)Yn\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n(X) Y^n such that the power series a0(X)a_0(X) involves only powers of XX with exponent ≥0\geq 0. Show that the principal ideal (X)(X) is the unique maximal ideal of AA, but the ideal of AA generated by the elements YX−nY X^{-n} (n≥0n \geq 0 an arbitrary integer) is not principal
