Algebra, VII

Let AA be an integral domain and let SS be a multiplicatively closed subset of AA not containing 00. Let S−1AS^{-1}A denote the ring of elements s−1as^{-1}a (s∈S,a∈As \in S, a \in A) in the field of fractions KK of AA (I, p. 116). a) Show that if AA is a principal ideal domain then so is S−1AS^{-1}A. b) Let AA be a principal ideal domain and let pp be an irreducible element of AA; show that the complement SS of the ideal (p)(p) is multiplicatively closed ; in the ring S−1AS^{-1}A the ideal pS−1ApS^{-1}A is the unique maximal ideal, and the quotient field S−1A/pS−1AS^{-1}A/pS^{-1}A is isomorphic to A/(p)A/(p).
