Exercise 4, § 3

Algebra, VII, p. 60

Let EE be a torsion-free module over a principal ideal domain AA. a) Show that, if FF is a pure submodule of EE (VII, p. 55, Ex. 7), then E/FE/F is torsion-free, and conversely. b) Let FF be a submodule of EE generated by a maximal pseudofree family (VII, p. 55, Ex. 4); then FF is a pure, free submodule of EE. Show that, for all 1∈E/F1 \in E/F, there exist a noninvertible element aa of AA and an element y′∈E/Fy' \in E/F such that x=ay′x = a y', but that E/FE/F is not necessarily a divisible module (cf. Ex. 3).
