Exercise 5, § 3

Algebra, VII, p. 60

Let AA be a principal ideal domain having a unique maximal ideal AπA \pi (cf. VII, p. 48, Ex. 4). Let EE be a torsion-free AA-module, and MM a free submodule of EE, such that E/ME/M is torsion-free, divisible and of rank 1. Let (eα)(e_\alpha) be a basis of MM, let uu be a nonzero element of E/ME/M, and uu an element of the coset uu; for each integer n>0n > 0, let unu_n be an element of EE such that u≡πnun(modM)u \equiv \pi^n u_n \pmod{M}. Put u=πnun+∑λnαeαu = \pi^n u_n + \sum \lambda_{n\alpha} e_\alpha.

a) Show that MM is generated by MM and the unu_n, and that Aα−Aα−1,α∈AnnA_\alpha - A_{\alpha-1,\alpha} \in A n^n for all α\alpha and for every integer n>0n > 0 (cf. Ex. 4, a)). b) Suppose in addition that AA is complete with respect to the topology T\mathscr{T} defined by taking the ideals AnnA n^n as a basis of open neighbourhoods of 00 in AA (Gen. Top., III, p. 5); put Aα=lim⁡n→∞Aα−1,αA_\alpha = \lim_{n \to \infty} A_{\alpha-1,\alpha}. Show that, if μ\mu and μα\mu_\alpha are such that μu−∑μαeα\mu u - \sum \mu_\alpha e_\alpha belongs to all the submodules πnE\pi^n E, then necessarily μα=λαμ\mu_\alpha = \lambda_\alpha \mu for all α\alpha.
