Algebra, VII, p. 69

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a principal ideal domain and let MM be a finitely generated AA-module. Show that if NN and PP are two AA-modules such that M⊕NM \oplus N and M⊕PM \oplus P are isomorphic, then NN and PP are isomorphic. (Reduce to the case where MM is cyclic ; by identifying M⊕NM \oplus N with M⊕PM \oplus P, we may consider an AA-module EE decomposed in two ways as a direct sum of submodules F⊕NF \oplus N and G⊕PG \oplus P, where FF and GG are cyclic and isomorphic. In the case where FF and GG are isomorphic to AA, show that if N≠PN \neq P then NN is the direct sum of N∩PN \cap P and a submodule isomorphic to AA. If FF and GG are isomorphic to A/AπnA/\mathbf{A}\pi^n, where π\pi is an irreducible element of AA, consider two generators a,ba, b of F,GF, G respectively, and examine the cases πna∉G, πnb∉F\pi^n a \notin G,\ \pi^n b \notin F, and finally the case where both πn−1a∈G\pi^{n-1}a \in G and πn−1b∈F\pi^{n-1}b \in F; in this last case, consider the element a+ba + b of EE and the submodule it generates.)
