Exercise 1, § 5

Algebra, VII, p. 70

Let uu be an endomorphism of a finite dimensional vector space EE, and let VV be a subspace of EE invariant under uu. Show that the characteristic polynomial of the restriction of uu to VV divides that of uu. Hence obtain an elementary proof of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem (reduce to the case where EuE_u is cyclic, and use formula (2) of VII, p. 30).
