a) Show that, over an arbitrary field KK, the matrix

(λαβ13β14…β1n0λαβ24…β2n00λα…β3n⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯0000…α0000…λ) \begin{pmatrix} \lambda & \alpha & \beta_{13} & \beta_{14} & \ldots & \beta_{1n} \\ 0 & \lambda & \alpha & \beta_{24} & \ldots & \beta_{2n} \\ 0 & 0 & \lambda & \alpha & \ldots & \beta_{3n} \\ \cdots & \cdots & \cdots & \cdots & \cdots & \cdots \\ 0 & 0 & 0 & 0 & \ldots & \alpha \\ 0 & 0 & 0 & 0 & \ldots & \lambda \end{pmatrix}

is similar to the Jordan matrix Un,λU_{n,\lambda} if α≠0\alpha \neq 0. b) If λ≠0\lambda \neq 0 and KK is of characteristic 0, show that (Un,λ)m(U_{n,\lambda})^m is similar to the Jordan matrix Un,λmU_{n,\lambda^m} for every integer mm (positive or negative). c) Show that (Un,0)m=0(U_{n,0})^m = 0 for m≥nm \geq n. For 0<m<n0 < m < n, let n−1=km+qn - 1 = km + q with 0≤q<m0 \leq q < m; show that (Un,0)m(U_{n,0})^m has q+1q + 1 similarity invariants equal to Xk+1X^{k+1} and m−q−1m - q - 1 similarity invariants equal to XkX^k (arrange the canonical basis of KnK^n in a suitable order). d) Similarly, determine the similarity invariants of f(Un,λ)f(U_{n,\lambda}) for f∈K[X]f \in K[X]. e) Discuss the same problems for KK of characteristic p≠0p \neq 0.
