Algebra, VII, p. 70

a) Show that every square matrix over a field KK is similar to its transpose (reduce to the case of a Jordan matrix). b) Show that over the ring Z\mathbf{Z} of rational integers, the matrix (8201)\begin{pmatrix} 8 & 2 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is not similar to its transpose. c) Let uu be an endomorphism of a finite dimensional vector space over KK. Then every eigenvalue λ\lambda of uu is also an eigenvalue of the transpose endomorphism ′u'u of E∗E^*. Moreover, if AA and μ\mu are two distinct eigenvalues of uu, if xx is an eigenvector of uu corresponding to AA, and if y∗y^* is an eigenvector of ′u'u corresponding to μ\mu, then ⟨x,y∗⟩=0\langle x, y^* \rangle = 0.
