Exercise 5, § 5

Algebra, VII, p. 70

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let KK be an algebraically closed field, and let AA be a square matrix of order nn over KK, in the form of a diagonal block diag⁡(Ai)\operatorname{diag}(A_i) of lower triangular matrices AiA_i, such that the diagonal entries of AiA_i are all equal to the same element aa, of KK (1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r), and αi≠αj\alpha_i \neq \alpha_j for i≠ji \neq j. Show that every square matrix BB which commutes with AA is a diagonal block diag⁡(Bi)\operatorname{diag}(B_i), where BiB_i is the same size as AiA_i for 1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r. b) Let MM be a set of commuting square matrices of order nn over KK. Show that by applying the same similarity to all the matrices in MM, we can make them all into diagonal blocks diag⁡(Xi)\operatorname{diag}(X_i) of lower triangular matrices, where the number rr of XiX_i's and the order mm, of XiX_i for each ii, are the same for each matrix in MM, and where all the eigenvalues of XiX_i are equal. (Use aa) to reduce to the case where r=1r = 1, then Lemma 3 of VII, p. 41 to show that in this case all the matrices in MM have nonzero common eigenvector, and complete the proof by induction on nn)
