Exercise 7, § 5

Algebra, VII, p. 71

Let AA be a matrix with mm rows and nn columns, of rank rr, over a field KK. If PP is a square matrix of order mm and QQ is a square matrix of order nn over KK, such that PAQ=APAQ = A, show that there exists a matrix P′P' similar to PP and a matrix Q′Q' similar to QQ such that

P′=(RS0U),Q′=(R−10S′U′) P' = \begin{pmatrix} R & S \\ 0 & U \end{pmatrix}, \quad Q' = \begin{pmatrix} R^{-1} & 0 \\ S' & U' \end{pmatrix}

where RR is an invertible square matrix of order rr, UU (resp. U′U') is a square matrix of order m−rm - r (resp. n−rn - r), and SS (resp. S′S') is a matrix with rr rows and m−rm - r columns (resp. n−rn - r rows and mm columns).
