Algebra, VII, p. 71

Let AA be a square matrix of order nn, let BB be a square matrix or order mm, and let CC be a matrix with mm rows and nn columns over a field KK. Reduce the equation XA=BX+CXA = BX + C, where XX is an unknown matrix with mm rows and nn columns over KK, to a system of linear congruences in the polynomial ring K[Y]K[Y] (for all f∈K[Y]f \in K[Y], notice that Xf(A)=f(B)X+H(f)Xf(A) = f(B)X + H(f) for some well defined matrix H(f)H(f) with mm rows and nn columns; let ⊕Ei\oplus E_i be the decomposition of the module EE associated to AA (Sect. 1) as a direct sum of cyclic modules, whose annihilators are the similarity invariants fif_i of AA which are distinct from 1 (Prop. 2), and let aia_i be generators of the EiE_i; in the same way define the submodules FjF_j, generated by bjb_j, and the polynomials gjg_j corresponding to BB; write Xfi(A)ai=0Xf_i(A)a_i = 0; then decompose XuXu, and H(fj)aiH(f_j)a_i in terms of the FjF_j, and show that the conditions thus obtained from the equations Xfi(A)ai=0Xf_i(A)a_i = 0 are necessary and sufficient for the existence of a solution).
