Algebra, VIII, p. 207

Let A be a ring. Denote by I(A)\mathscr{I}(A) the set of pairs (n,p)(n, p) with nn an integer and pp an idempotent in Mn(A)M_n(A). Define a law of addition on I(A)\mathscr{I}(A) by setting (m,p)+(n,q)=(m+n,(p00q)(m, p) + (n, q) = (m+n,\begin{pmatrix} p & 0 \\ 0 & q \end{pmatrix} ).

a) Let P(Ao)\mathscr{P}(A^o) be the monoid of classes of finitely generated projective right A-modules. Let φ:I(A)→P(Ao)\varphi :\mathscr{I}(A)\rightarrow \mathscr{P}(A^o) be the mapping defined by φ(n,p)=\varphi (n, p) = cl(Im pp). Prove that φ\varphi is a surjective homomorphism and that elements (m,p)(m, p) and (n,q)(n, q) of I(A)\mathscr{I}(A) have the same image by φ\varphi if and only if there exist a∈Mm,n(A)a\in M_{m,n}(A) and b∈b\in Mn,m(A)M_{n,m}(A) such that ab=pab=p and ba=qba=q.

b) Deduce that the groups K0(A)K_0(A) and K0(Ao)K_0(A^o) are isomorphic.
