Algebra, VIII, p. 208

Let A be a pseudoring, that is, an associative not necessarily unital Z\mathbf{Z}-algebra, and A~\widetilde{A} the Z\mathbf{Z}-algebra deduced from A by adjoining a unit element (III, §1, No. 2, p. 431); the set A~\widetilde{A} is equal to Z×A\mathbf{Z}\times A. Denote the homomorphism (n,a)↦n(n, a)\mapsto n by ε:A~→Z\varepsilon :\widetilde{A}\rightarrow \mathbf{Z}, and denote the kernel of the homomorphism ε∗:K0(A~)→K0(Z)\varepsilon^*: K_0(\widetilde{A})\rightarrow K_0(\mathbf{Z}) associated with ε\varepsilon by K0(A)K_0(A).

a) Prove that if A is unital, then A~\widetilde{A} is isomorphic to the product ring Z×A\mathbf{Z}\times A and the definition of K0(A)K_0(A) is compatible with that given in No.8.

b) Let A and B be pseudorings and f:A→Bf: A\rightarrow B a homomorphism. Let f~:A~→B~\widetilde{f}:\widetilde{A}\rightarrow \widetilde{B} be the ring homomorphism defined by f~((n,a))=(n,f(a))\widetilde{f}((n, a)) = (n, f(a)). Prove that f~∗\widetilde{f}^* maps K0(A)K_0(A) into K0(B)K_0(B). Denote the homomorphism deduced from f~∗\widetilde{f}^* by f∗:K0(A)→K0(B)f^*: K_0(A)\rightarrow K_0(B). c) Suppose that ff is surjective; denote its kernel by a\mathfrak{a} and the canonical injection of a\mathfrak{a} into A by ii. Show that the sequence

K0(a)⟶i∗K0(A)⟶f∗K0(B) K_0(\mathfrak{a})\longrightarrow^{i^*}K_0(A)\longrightarrow^{f^*}K_0(B)

is exact. If, moreover, there exists a homomorphism of pseudorings s:B→As: B\rightarrow A such that f∘s=f\circ s= IdB_B, then i∗i^* is injective and f∗f^* is surjective (apply Exercise 8 by first taking (A,A,B)(A,A,B) and then (D,Z,A)(D,\mathbf{Z},A) for the triple (A,B,C)(A,B,C)).

d) Prove that the conclusions of Exercises 7 and 8 extend to the case of pseudorings. e) Denote by M∞(A)\mathbf{M}_{\infty}(A) the pseudoring of N×N\mathbf{N}\times \mathbf{N} matrices with entries in A having only finitely many nonzero entries. Let f:A→M∞(A)f: A\rightarrow \mathbf{M}_{\infty}(A) be the mapping that sends a∈Aa\in A to the matrix (bij)(b_{ij}) with b00=ab_{00}=a and bij=0b_{ij}= 0 if (i,j)≠(0,0)(i, j)\not= (0,0). Prove that f∗f^* is an isomorphism from K0(A)K_0(A) to K0(M∞(A))K_0(\mathbf{M}_{\infty}(A)) (use Exercises 4 and 7).
