Algebra, VIII, p. 429

Let G be a finite group, H a subgroup of G,σG,\sigma a finite-dimensional representation of H, and ρ\rho the representation of G induced by σ\sigma. Let C be a conjugacy class of G; the set C∩HC\cap H is the disjoint union of a finite family (Di)i∈I(D_i)_{i\in I} of conjugacy classes of H.

a) Prove the formula χρ(C)=(G:H)Card(C)∑i∈I\chi_{\rho}(C) =\frac{(G:H)}{Card(C)}\sum_{i\in I} Card(Di_i)χσ(Di)\chi_{\sigma}(D_i).

b) If σ\sigma is the trivial representation, then χρ(C)=(G:H)\chi_{\rho}(C)=(G : H) Card(C)−1^{-1}Card(C ∩H\cap H) holds.
