Algebra, VIII, p. 431

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Keep the notation of the previous exercise. Let p=(pi)\mathbf{p}= (p_i) and q=(qj)\mathbf{q}= (q_j) be two elements of Sn\mathscr{S}_n.

a) Suppose that we have p>q\mathbf{p}>\mathbf{q} for the lexicographical order. Prove that we have apxbq=0a_{\mathbf{p}}xb_{\mathbf{q}}= 0 for every x∈Ax\in A. (Reduce to the case x=1x= 1. Observe that if (Pi),(Pj′)(P_i),(P'_j) denote the partitions associated with p\mathbf{p} and (Qk),(Ql′)(Q_k),(Q'_l) those associated with q\mathbf{q}, then, denoting by ss the smallest integer nn such that pn≠qnp_n\not=q_n, we have Card(Ps∩Q1′_s\cap Q'_1)⩾2\geqslant 2, and construct a transposition τ\tau such that apτ=apa_{\mathbf{p}}\tau =a_{\mathbf{p}} and τbq=−bq.\tau b_{\mathbf{q}}=-b_{\mathbf{q}}.)

b) Deduce that if p≠q\mathbf{p}\not=\mathbf{q}, then the A-modules VpV_{\mathbf{p}} and VqV_{\mathbf{q}} are not isomorphic (apply a), using the antiautomorphism of A that sends eσe_{\sigma} to eσ−1)e_{\sigma^{-1}}).

c) Prove that the mapping that sends a sequence p\mathbf{p} to the representation (Vp)(K)(V_{\mathbf{p}})_{(K)} defines a bijection from Sn\mathscr{S}_n to the set SK(Sn)\mathscr{S}_K(\mathfrak{S}_n) of classes of simple K[SnK[\mathfrak{S}_n]-modules. d) For p∈Sn\mathbf{p}\in \mathscr{S}_n, denote by p‾\overline{\mathbf{p}} the sequence defined by p‾j=\overline{p}_j= Card(Pj′'_j) (Exercise 22). Prove that the mapping p↦p‾\mathbf{p}\mapsto \overline{\mathbf{p}} is a involution of Sn\mathscr{S}_n; the A-module Vp‾V_{\overline{\mathbf{p}}} is isomorphic to Vp⊗QQεV_{\mathbf{p}}\otimes_{\mathbf{Q}}\mathbf{Q}_{\varepsilon}, where Qε\mathbf{Q}_{\varepsilon} denotes the 1-dimensional representation over Q\mathbf{Q} associated with the signature.

e) Describe the representations corresponding to the sequences (1,...,1)(1, . . . ,1) and (n)(n), as well as to the sequence (n−1,1)(n-1,1).
