Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a power of a prime number and F a finite field with elements; take G to be the group .
a) Describe the conjugacy classes of G (distinguish four types of classes, containing, respectively, , and elements).
b) The group G acts on the projective line P over F; consider the representation of G (Exercise 6). For any group homomorphism , denote by the representation of degree 1 associated with the homomorphism det from G to , and set . Prove that is irreducible, and calculate its character.
c) Let B be the subgroup of G consisting of the upper triangular matrices. For in Hom(F), denote by the representation of B of degree 1 defined by , and set Ind. Prove that is irreducible for , while is isomorphic to (apply Exercise 8). The representations and are isomorphic if and only if the subsets and of Hom(F) are equal.
d) Let be an extension of F of degree 2; choosing a basis of over F allows one to identify with a subgroup of G = Aut. Let Hom(F); calculate Ind, and prove that it is equal to Ind. Denote by the restriction of to , and set Ind. Prove that if , then we have and , so that is the character of an irreducible representation of dimension . Prove that we thus obtain nonisomorphic irreducible representations. e) Prove that the irreducible representations for Hom(F) for a subset of Hom(F) with two elements, and for Hom(F) with are pairwise nonisomorphic and that every irreducible representation of G is isomorphic to one of them.
