Algebra, VIII, p. 75

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let A be a left Noetherian ring.

a) Let xx be a nonzero element of A. Prove that the left annihilator Ann xx of xx is not essential (among the elements that do not have this property, take an xx such that Ann xx is maximal, and consider Ax∩Ax\cap Ann xx).

b) Let xx be a right cancellable element of A. Prove that the ideal AxAx is essential (if a\mathfrak{a} is an ideal of A such that a∩Ax=0\mathfrak{a}\cap Ax= 0, consider the ideal a+ax+ax2+...\mathfrak{a}+\mathfrak{a}x+\mathfrak{a}x^2+. . .).

c) Deduce from a) and b) that every right cancellable element of A is cancellable. d) Let a\mathfrak{a} be an essential left ideal of A containing a nonnilpotent element. Prove that a\mathfrak{a} contains a cancellable element (let (x1,...,xn)(x_1, . . . , x_n) be a sequence of nonzero elements of a\mathfrak{a} satisfying Ann xi2=x^2_i= Ann xix_i and xi+1∈x_{i+1}\in Ann xi∩⋯∩x_i\cap \cdots \cap Ann x1x_1 for every i⩾1i\geqslant 1; observe that a\mathfrak{a} contains the direct sum of the AxiAx_i. Deduce that there exists such a sequence with ⋂i\bigcap_i Ann xi=0x_i= 0; prove that the element ∑xi2\sum x^2_i is then right cancellable, and use c)).
