Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 69

In R2\mathbf{R}^2 consider a set of 2m2m points of the form (ai,bi′),(ai,bi′′)(a_i, b'_i), (a_i, b''_i) where bi′≤bi′′b'_i \leq b''_i for 1≤i≤m1 \leq i \leq m. Let nn be an integer <m−2< m - 2. In order that there should exist a polynomial P(x)P(x) of degree ≤n\leq n such that bi′≤P(ai)≤bi′′b'_i \leq P(a_i) \leq b''_i for 1≤i≤m1 \leq i \leq m, it is sufficient that, for every family (ik)1≤k≤n+2(i_k)_{1 \leq k \leq n+2} of n+2n + 2 indices ii, there exists a polynomial Q(x)Q(x) of degree ≤n\leq n such that bik′≤Q(aik)≤bik′′b'_{i_k} \leq Q(a_{i_k}) \leq b''_{i_k} for every integer kk such that 1≤k≤n+21 \leq k \leq n + 2.
