Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 69

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let BB be a non-empty closed convex subset of EE, a Hausdorff topological vector space, and let XX be a non-empty compact set in EE. Show that if AA is a subset of EE such that A+X⊂B+XA + X \subset B + X, then A⊂BA \subset B (if a∈Aa \in A, consider a sequence (xn)(x_n) of points of XX defined inductively by the relation a+xn=bn+xn+1a + x_n = b_n + x_{n+1}, where bn∈Bb_n \in B). Deduce that, if A,BA, B are two non-empty subsets of EE, using the distance in EE and the procedure of GT, IX, § 2, exerc. 6. Show A+X=B+XA + X = B + X implies the relation A=BA = B. b) Let EE be a normed space, σ\sigma the distance function defined on the set F(E)\mathfrak{F}(E) of closed non-empty subsets of EE, using the distance in EE and the procedure of TG, IX, p. 91, exerc. 6. Show that if A,B,CA, B, C are three non-empty compact convex sets in EE then σ(A+C,B+C)=σ(A,B)\sigma(A + C, B + C) = \sigma(A, B) (if SλS_\lambda is the ball defined by ∥x∥≤λ\|x\| \leq \lambda, note that A+SλA + S_\lambda and B+SλB + S_\lambda are closed convex sets and use aa). c) Deduce from aa and bb that the set K(E)\mathfrak{K}(E) of non-empty, compact, convex subsets of a normed space EE, with the distance σ\sigma, can be identified with a cone in a normed space of which the laws of composition induce on K(E)\mathfrak{K}(E) the laws (A,B)→A+B(A, B) \to A + B and (λ,A)→λA(\lambda, A) \to \lambda A.
