Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 77

Let NN be a hyperplane in a vector subspace MM of a vector space EE and let AA be a convex set in EE, such that all the points of A∩MA \cap M are on the same side of NN and which also possesses the following property; for any y≠0y \neq 0 in EE, there exists x∈A∩Mx \in A \cap M such that x+λy∈Ax + \lambda y \in A for all λ\lambda such that ∣λ∣|\lambda| is sufficiently small. Show that there exists then, a hyperplane HH of EE such that all the points of AA are on the same side of HH and such that H∩M=NH \cap M = N. (Reduce to the case N={0}N = \{0\}; if a≠0a \neq 0 belongs to A∩MA \cap M, consider the set U\mathscr{U} of pointed convex cones with vertex 0 containing AA and not containing −a-a; show that there exists a maximal element CC of U\mathscr{U} and that CC is a maximal pointed convex cone (exerc. 1)). Deduce a new proof of the Hahn-Banach theorem.
