Exercise 21, § 5
Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 79
It is set in small type as supplementary.
a) In let () be points that are affinely independent. Denote the convex envelope of the by S and the convex envelope of the with by for . For each k let be a compact convex set containing , and suppose that S is contained in the union of the ; show then that . (Argue by reductio ad absurdum and induction on , considering the intersection of the with indices and supposing that , which would allow the strict separation of the two convex sets by a hyperplane.) b) Let X be a compact convex set in a Hausdorff topological vector space E, and a family of compact convex sets contained in X, such that for every set having (resp. m) elements, the intersection (resp. the union) of the with indices is not empty (resp. is equal to X). Show that if the intersection is not empty. (This is effectively proving that for any finite set H of indices of L, we have . Argue by induction on assuming that the result has been proved for indices. Argue then by reductio ad absurdum, considering for each index a point , and showing by the aid of Helly’s th. (II, p. 68, exerc. 21) that the generate a linear variety of dimension , then finally apply a).)
