Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 80

Let EE be an infinite dimensional, metrisable, locally convex space. a) Show that there exists a sequence (an)(a_n) of points of EE tending to 0 and a decreasing sequence (Ln)(L_n), of closed vector subspaces of EE, such that LnL_n is of codimension nn in EE and that, for all nn, the point ana_n belongs to Ln−Ln+1L_n - L_{n+1}. b) Suppose further that EE is complete. Show that we can then find sequences (an)(a_n) and (Ln)(L_n) verifying the conditions a), and such that in addition, for every bounded sequence of real number (λn)(\lambda_n), the series, whose general term is λnan\lambda_n a_n, is commutatively convergent in EE, and that the linear mapping (ξn)↦∑ξnan(\xi_n) \mapsto \sum \xi_n a_n of the Banach space B(N)\mathscr{B}(\mathbf{N}) in EE is injective and continuous. c) Deduce from b) that when EE is an infinite dimensional Fréchet space then every basis of EE on R\mathbf{R} has cardinal at least equal to 2Card(N)2^{Card(\mathbf{N})} (cf. I, p. 22, exerc. 5). If there exists an enumerable set that is dense in EE, then every basis of EE has the cardinal of the continuum.
