Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 80
Let be an infinite dimensional Fréchet space of enumerable type. a) Show that there exists a sequence of linearly independent elements of such that each sequence and is total (use exerc. 24, c). b) Let be the vector subspace of generated by the (). For every let be the subspace generated by the with . For each , let be the restriction to of the canonical homomorphism of on , and let be the topology on which is the inverse image under of the quotient topology, on . Show that each of the topologies on is a Hausdorff locally convex topology, but that the lower bound of the in the set of locally convex topologies on is the coarsest topology on . \* c) Take to be a Hilbert space; show that we can choose the sequence so that if is the closed vector subspace generated by the , then has infinite codimension and so that the images of the and the in are still linearly independent. Write for the subspace of that is the sum of and of the subspace generated by the with , and give to the topology which is the inverse image under the canonical mapping restricted to , of the quotient topology on . Show that the sequence is an inductive system of topological vector spaces such that is closed in for the topology of , but that is not closed in the inductive limit space of this sequence. \*
