Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 81

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let E,FE, F be two Hausdorff topological vector spaces, and XX (resp. YY) a compact convex set in EE (resp. FF). Let ff be a real valued function defined in X×YX \times Y with the following properties : (i) For all x∈Xx \in X, the mapping y↦f(x,y)y \mapsto f(x, y) is lower semi-continuous in YY, and for all c∈Rc \in \mathbf{R}, the set of the y∈Yy \in Y such that f(x,y)≤cf(x, y) \leq c is convex. (ii) For all y∈Yy \in Y, the mapping x↦f(x,y)x \mapsto f(x, y) is upper semi-continuous in XX, and for all c∈Rc \in \mathbf{R}, the set of the x∈Xx \in X such that f(x,y)≥cf(x, y) \geq c is convex. Show that, in these conditions, we have

sup⁡x∈X(inf⁡y∈Yf(x,y))=inf⁡y∈Y(sup⁡x∈Xf(x,y)). \sup_{x \in X} (\inf_{y \in Y} f(x, y)) = \inf_{y \in Y} (\sup_{x \in X} f(x, y)).
(Argue by reductio ad absurdum, supposing that there exists a number cc such that
sup⁡x∈X(inf⁡y∈Yf(x,y))<c<inf⁡y∈Y(sup⁡x∈Xf(x,y)). \sup_{x \in X} (\inf_{y \in Y} f(x, y)) < c < \inf_{y \in Y} (\sup_{x \in X} f(x, y)).
For all x∈Xx \in X (resp. all y∈Yy \in Y) let AxA_x be the set of y∈Yy \in Y such that f(x,y)>cf(x, y) > c (resp. ByB_y the set of the x∈Xx \in X such that f(x,y)<cf(x, y) < c), which is open in YY (resp. in XX); the AxA_x (resp. the ByB_y) form a covering of YY (resp. XX) when xx varies in XX (resp. yy varies in YY). Show that there exist two finite sets X0⊂X,Y0⊂YX_0 \subset X, Y_0 \subset Y such that : 1° for all yy belonging to the convex envelope B0B_0 of Y0Y_0, there exists x∈X0x \in X_0 such that f(x,y)>cf(x, y) > c, and X0X_0 is minimal for this property ; 2° for all xx belonging to the convex envelope A0A_0 of X0X_0, there exists y∈Y0y \in Y_0 such that f(x,y)<cf(x, y) < c, and Y0Y_0 is minimal for this property. Then for all y∈Y0y \in Y_0, let CyC_y be the set of x∈A0x \in A_0 such that f(x,y)≥cf(x, y) \geq c; using exerc. 21, a) of II, p. 79, show that the intersection of the CyC_y for y∈Y0y \in Y_0 is not empty. Proceed in the same way in B0B_0 and obtain a contradiction.)
