Exercise 4, § 5

Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 77

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let EE be a normed space and AA a complete convex set for the uniform structure induced by that of EE. a) Let x′x' be a continuous linear form on EE that is bounded in AA. Consider a number k>0k > 0 and the closed convex cone PP in EE, with vertex 0 and formed by the x∈Ex \in E such that ∥x∥≤k⟨x,x′⟩\|x\| \leq k \langle x, x' \rangle; it is pointed and proper. Show that for the order on EE for which PP is the set of elements ≥0\geq 0, the set AA is inductive (use the fact that the restriction of x′x' to AA is increasing and bounded). b) Deduce from a) that the set of points of the frontier FF of AA which belong to a support hyperplane of AA is dense in FF (Bishop-Phelps th.). (For each point z∈Fz \in F, consider a point y∈CAy \in \mathscr{C} A arbitrarily close to zz, and separate yy strictly from AA by a closed hyperplane of equation ⟨x,x′⟩=α\langle x, x' \rangle = \alpha, with ∥x′∥=1\|x'\| = 1 and use a) with k>1k > 1, also exerc. 3 above.)
