Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 77

Let AA be a closed convex set in Rn\mathbf{R}^n and x0x_0 be a point of CA\mathscr{C} A; denote the euclidean distance in Rn\mathbf{R}^n by dd. a) Show, without using th. 1 of II, p. 36, that there exists one and only one point x∈Ax \in A such that d(x0,x)=d(x0,A)d(x_0, x) = d(x_0, A), and that the hyperplane orthogonal to the line joining x0x_0 and xx, and passing through xx is a support hyperplane of AA. b) Deduce from a) a new proof of th. 1 of II, p. 36 when the space EE is finite dimensional. (Reduce to the case when MM is a frontier point x0x_0 of AA; note that the lower bound of the distance of x0x_0 from support hyperplanes of AA, is zero, and use the compactness of Sn−1S_{n-1}.)
