Exercise 19, § 7

Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 90

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

In the space Rn\mathbf{R}^n, let (Kα)(K_\alpha) be a family of compact sets, in number ≥n+1\geq n + 1, and such that none of them is contained in an affine hyperplane. Suppose that for every family (uα)(u_\alpha) of affine automorphisms of Rn\mathbf{R}^n, if any n+1n + 1 of the sets uα(Kα)u_\alpha(K_\alpha) have a common point, then all the uα(Kα)u_\alpha(K_\alpha) have a common point. Show that under these conditions the KαK_\alpha are convex. (Suppose on the contrary that there exist n+1n + 1 points x1,...,xn+1x_1, ..., x_{n+1} in the same set KαK_\alpha and a point x0x_0 which belongs to the convex envelope of the set of the xix_i (i≥1i \geq 1) but does not belong to KαK_\alpha. Note that for every index i≥1i \geq 1, there is an affine automorphism uiu_i of Rn\mathbf{R}^n and an index αi\alpha_i such that x0x_0 and the xjx_j of index j≠ij \neq i are extremal points of ui(Kαi)u_i(K_{\alpha_i}), and show that the n+2n + 2 sets KαK_\alpha and ui(Kαi)u_i(K_{\alpha_i}) have no points in common.)
