Exercise 25, § 7

Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 91

*a) Let C⊂RnC \subset \mathbf{R}^n be a closed convex cone with vertex 0. Show that the projections of CC on every 2-dimensional subspace of Rn\mathbf{R}^n are closed if and only if CC is a polyhedral cone (exerc. 24). (Reduce to the case when CC contains no line : argue by induction on nn using the existence of a compact sole SS of CC (II, p. 90, exerc. 21, a)), and project onto a hyperplane parallel to a line joining 0 to an extremal point of SS, and deduce that SS is locally polyhedral (exerc. 24). *b) Deduce from a) that, if we give Rn\mathbf{R}^n the order for which CC is the set of elements ⩾0\geqslant 0, then, every positive linear form on any vector subspace FF of Rn\mathbf{R}^n can be extended to a positive linear form on Rn\mathbf{R}^n if, and only if, CC is a polyhedral cone (apply a) to the polar cone C∘C^\circ. If CC is the cone in R3\mathbf{R}^3 generated by the (ξ1,ξ2,ξ3)(\xi_1, \xi_2, \xi_3) such that ξ1=1,ξ3⩾(ξ23)−\xi_1 = 1, \xi_3 \geqslant (\xi_2^3)^-, and FF is the subspace ξ3=0\xi_3 = 0 give an example of a positive linear form on FF that cannot be extended to a positive linear form on R3\mathbf{R}^3. *c) Let AA be a polyhedron in Rn\mathbf{R}^n. Then, the convex envelope of A∪BA \cup B is closed for every polyhedron BB, if and only if, AA is compact (use exerc. 24, d)).
