Let E be a Hausdorff locally convex space and X a compact convex set in E. Denote by A(X)\mathscr{A}(X) the set of continuous affine functions in X (not necessarily restrictions to X of continuous affine functions in E, cf. II, p. 78, exerc. 11). For every real valued function f that is bounded above in X, put f~(x)=inf⁡h(h(x))\tilde{f}(x) = \inf_h(h(x)) for all x ∈ X where h varies in the set of function of A(X)\mathscr{A}(X) such that h≥fh \geq f. a) Show that f~\tilde{f} is an upper semi-continuous concave function. If ff itself is upper semicontinuous and concave, then f~=f\tilde{f} = f (cf. II, p. 39, prop. 5).

b) Suppose that ff is upper semi-continuous. Show that f~\tilde{f} is the lower envelope of the function g~\tilde{g}, when gg varies in a set of functions that are continuous in XX of which ff is the lower envelope. c) For all x∈Xx \in X, write Mx\mathscr{M}_x for the set of finite families μ=((μj,xj))\mu = ((\mu_j, x_j)) where the xjx_j are points of XX, the μj\mu_j are numbers ⩾0\geqslant 0 satisfying ∑μj=1\sum \mu_j = 1, such that x=∑μjxjx = \sum \mu_j x_j. For each real valued function ff bounded above in XX, put f′(x)=sup⁡μ∈Mx∑μjf(xj)f'(x) = \sup_{\mu \in \mathscr{M}_x} \sum \mu_j f(x_j) for all x∈Xx \in X. Show that f′f' is a concave function in XX and that f′⩽f~f' \leqslant \tilde{f}. d) Suppose that ff is continuous in XX. Given ε>0\varepsilon > 0, let (Uk)1≤k≤N(U_k)_{1 \leq k \leq N} be a covering of XX by convex open sets such that the relations x∈Uk,y∈Ukx \in U_k, y \in U_k imply the inequality ∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤ε|f(x) - f(y)| \leq \varepsilon. Put A1=U1A_1 = U_1 and, for k>1k > 1, Ak=Uk∩(∪i=1k−1Ui)A_k = U_k \cap (\cup_{i=1}^{k-1} U_i). Show that, for all x∈Xx \in X, there exists a family μ=((μk,xk))\mu = ((\mu_k, x_k)) of N terms belonging to Mx\mathscr{M}_x with xk∈Ukx_k \in U_k for 1≤k≤N1 \leq k \leq N such that ∑kμkf(xk)≥f′(x)−2ε\sum_k \mu_k f(x_k) \geq f'(x) - 2\varepsilon (if we have the inequality ∑jλjf′(yj)≥f′(x)−ε\sum_j \lambda_j f'(y_j) \geq f'(x) - \varepsilon, group the yjy_j belonging to the same AkA_k together). e) Deduce from d) that when ff is continuous then f′f' is upper semi-continuous and f′=f~f' = \tilde{f}. (If U\mathscr{U} is an ultrafilter on XX finer than the filter of the neighbourhoods of a point x∈Xx \in X and if f′(y)≥rf'(y) \geq r for all the points yy of a set belonging to U\mathscr{U}, show that f′(x)≥r−2εf'(x) \geq r - 2\varepsilon, by making a family μy∈My\mu_y \in \mathscr{M}_y correspond to each yy, which satisfies condition d) and proceeding to the limit through U\mathscr{U}.)
