Exercise 41, § 7

Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 94

Let SS be a compact simplex contained in a Hausdorff locally convex space EE (II, p. 71 exerc. 41), and ff an upper semi-continuous convex function that is bounded below. Let gg be a lower semi-continuous function that is concave and such that g≥fg \geq f. a) If we write u=f~,v=−(−g)f~u = \tilde{f}, v = -(-g)\tilde{f}, then uu and vv are affine functions such that u≤vu \leq v (use exerc. 39, b) and exerc. 40). b) Show that there exists an affine function hh, continuous in XX and such that f≤h≤gf \leq h \leq g (D. Edwards’ th.). (We can replace ff by uu and gg by vv. Construct three sequences (um),(vm),(hm)(u_m), (v_m), (h_m) of affine functions such that in XX, the function umu_m is upper semi-continuous, the function vmv_m is lower semi-continuous and the function hmh_m is continuous and

u−12m≤um<hm<vm≤v+12mand∥hn+1−hn∥≤12n+1. u - \frac{1}{2^m} \leq u_m < h_m < v_m \leq v + \frac{1}{2^m} \quad \text{and} \quad \|h_{n+1} - h_n\| \leq \frac{1}{2^{n+1}}.

Use exerc. 29 of II, p. 81, for this.)
