Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 87

Let E, E' be two vector spaces in separating duality, and A be a convex set in E containing 0 and closed for σ(E,E′)\sigma(E, E'). For all a∈Aa \in A, the set Fa′F'_a of points x′∈A∘x' \in A^\circ such that ⟨a,x′⟩=−1\langle a, x' \rangle = -1 is a closed (for σ(E′,E)\sigma(E', E)), convex set of A∘A^\circ. Show that Fa′F'_a is the facet in A∘A^\circ of each of the internal points of Fa′F'_a relative to the linear variety generated by Fa′F'_a. We say that Fa′F'_a is the dual facet of aa in A∘A^\circ. If FaF_a is the facet of aa in A, show that Fa′F'_a is also the dual facet in A∘A^\circ of each of the internal points of FaF_a relative to the linear variety generated by FaF_a; further, if A is identified with A∘∘A^{\circ\circ}, the dual facet in AA of each internal point of Fa′F'_a relative to the linear variety generated by Fa′F'_a, contains FaF_a. When Fa′F'_a is not empty (which is always the case when EE is finite-dimensional and a≠0a \neq 0, cf. II, p. 78, exerc. 13), we say that each of Fa,Fa′F_a, F'_a is the dual facet of the other.

We say that a point a∈Aa \in A is smooth point of AA if Fa′F'_a is a single point (in other words if there exists one closed hyperplane of support of AA passing through aa); we say that aa is a point of strict convexity (or is an exposed point) if there exists a closed hyperplane HH supporting AA so that H∩A={a}H \cap A = \{a\}; this is the same as saying that there exists an internal point of Fa′F'_a (relative to a linear variety generated by Fa′F'_a) which is a smooth point of A∘A^\circ.
